Understanding Your Provider Network

Choosing a doctor is an important decision. We've answered some of the most common questions about finding and using your provider network to help you feel confident in your choices.

Think of a provider network as a team of healthcare professionals and facilities—including doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and labs—that have a special agreement with your health plan. Because they are "in-network," you will typically pay less for their services.

Visiting an in-network provider helps you save money. We have negotiated special rates with these providers. This means you’ll have lower out-of-pocket costs, like copays and deductibles. If you see an out-of-network provider, your costs may be much higher, and in some cases, not covered at all.

If using an out-of-network provider you may also be responsible for submitting claims and obtaining necessary approvals, unlike in-network services where these responsibilities often fall to the provider.

Our online search tool is the best way to check. You can search by your doctor's name, their office, or the hospital they practice at. We recommend always checking the directory before you schedule an appointment. You can also call your provider’s office directly to confirm they accept your specific plan.

To determine your network access, examine the logos in the Network section. You can then use this reference guide to search for a provider anywhere in the United States.

It's easy to find specialists in our network. Use our search tool and filter by "Specialty," such as "Cardiology" or "Dermatology." Some plans may require a referral from your primary care doctor before seeing a specialist, so it's a good idea to check your plan details.

In a true emergency, go to the nearest hospital or emergency room. Your health plan will cover emergency services, even if the hospital is out-of-network. Once you are stable, your plan will help you coordinate any follow-up care with an in-network provider.

By using the wrap network, you can access care when you're away from home and still receive in-network benefits, which means you'll pay less and avoid the high costs and potential balance billing that come with using out-of-network providers.

Check Your ID Card: Look for the name of the wrap network on the back of your insurance card. It will often be listed with a logo. A few of our wrap network partners include:

Use the Provider Search Tool: Go to your wrap network provider's website and use their search tool to find doctors, hospitals, and other facilities in your location.

Confirm with the Provider: Before scheduling an appointment, always call the provider's office directly. When you call, confirm that they are in the specific wrap network you are using.

For any questions about your benefits, coverage, or network, please refer to the number on the back of your member ID card.
